The Temple of Odin: Strategies
Keep dying? Here are some useful tips:
- When you find a ring you think you'll need more than the one you already have, save it. They're quite small, after all. Keep some strength rings at all times. (Until you're really strong)
- Use bolts instead of balls when there isn't a big group of monsters to kill. (But remember, they are weaker so against tough monsters that you don't want near you, such as sneak thieves, balls can be a Good Thing.)
- Keep a potion/scroll or three in your belt to quickly heal yourself if you haven't enough mana. I also like to keep Lesser and Greater Restore Mana potions for big fights.
- Use phase door or teleport to get away from monsters that semi-permanently steal constitution/strength/intelligence/dexerity, then use some bolts or balls to kill them. You may wish to use detect monsters after phasing/teleporting.
- This one is kind of cheating: When you find a new item, save, identify/use it, and if it's something bad, such as a cursed item, load, go into inventory, and press Alt+N to rename the item. Next time you go into town, you can sell the item because the item isn't really identified and the store owners can't tell what it is until you sell it to them or you already have identified. Eventually, if you do this enough, the store owners will tell you to identify things before selling them to them, so you may only want to cheat them out of more expensive things.
- In case you were wondering, Rings of Adornment are worthless. However, the Amulet of the Kings is not. It would be quite stupid to sell the Amulet of the Kings until you've gotten to the third town (registered) as it is required to get there.
- The best spell to start with is Magic Arrow and for your second spell get Light. (If you light up a room you can see the monsters before you're right up to them.)
- You can store bags, packs, and chests in your belt and weapon slots. However, weapons are better for fighting with than non-weapons and if you have a non-belt container in your belt slot then Sneak Thieves will steal the entire pack with all its contents rather then just one item from it.
- Spell books are your friend! Buy them. Use them.
- You may want to hang around the upper levels gathering money, items, and experience. Fighting Surtur on experience level 5 is not fun.
- If you kill all the monsters on a dungeon level it will stay empty for quite a while. Something to avoid, in my opinion.
- When in town, cast some expensive spells and then rest and the stores will restock with different items.
- In CotW2, when you get to dungeon level four, don't rest until you've killed the ogres and rescued the prisoner. Then go to the castle.
- If poisoned and your max. health is so low that resting from full health will result in death by poison, use search instead of rest and use a heal spell right before the poison kills you.
- Using '(' and ')' instead of '<' and '>' to traverse dungeon levels will force the level to be regenerated, giving you a new, unexplored level filled with treasure. (This is probably for debugging purposes and so could be considered a cheat.) This even allows you to regenerate the level with Surtur and battle him again for another copy of the spoils. Be careful not to destroy any of your stashes this way. [Submitted by John Baker.]
